Jesse Saunders and Vince Lawrence are among the interviewees featured in the 90-minute film
A new documentary digging into the queer Black origins of house premiered at Sundance Film Festival last month.
Directed by filmmaker Elegance Bratton, Move Ya Body: The Birth Of House looks at the infamous 1979 Disco Demolition night and its bearing on the emergence of house, spearheaded by Chicago DJs and producers including Jesse Saunders and Vince Lawrence in the early 1980s.
Saunders and Lawrence are among the interviewees featured in the 90-minute film, which revisits the underground clubs of Chicago using archival footage and re-enactments.
“Honestly, it was a story of all the people in Chicago. One of the main characters in the film is Chicago, and I think Chicago is the main character because all of our participants represent the history which has built the city that we know today,” producer Chester Algernal Gordon told Annenberg Media on Monday (3rd February). “And I think that’s what drew me to it, is being able to tell their story and tell the story of a great American city.”
The official release date of the documentary has yet to be announced. Check out interviews with the cast and director below.
