To celebrate 40 years of house music, we joined Mike Dunn at Chicago’s ARC Music Festival and dived into the story behind his house anthem, ‘God Made Me Phunky’

Mike Dunn shares the story behind the making of his house classic, ‘God Made Me Phunky’.

Released in 1994, Dunn explains how the track “wasn’t suppose to happen”, but for the need to get a deal across the line. Produced in Chicago, with Dunn himself on vocals, he explains how he took influence by Rick James — someone his mother introduced him to as a child, through her funk and soul record collection.

Mike also reflects on the early Chicago house days and how, as the years have gone by, ‘God Made Me Phunky’ has become an undeniable gem of the sound.

Electronic music history is rich with unforgettable and timeless classics like these. In our Making Of A Dance Classic series, DJ Mag explores the tales behind some of the world’s favourite tracks, told by the people that made them.
