Church On Sunday is set to celebrate Black History Month with a series of events highlighting the Black origins of House Music. Throughout February, the Washington, D.C.-based collective will host DJ performances, discussions, and community activations focused on recognizing the genre’s pioneers and its continued influence.

House Music, which has grown into a global phenomenon, was created by Black artists who shaped and defined its signature sound. This month-long programming aims to acknowledge the genre’s deep cultural roots and highlight the contributions of those who have kept its legacy alive. Organizers say the theme, “HOUSE MUSIC IS BLACK MUSIC,” serves as a reminder of the genre’s history and the impact Black artists have had on dance music worldwide.

According to Xavier “Zay” Staley, founder of Church On Sunday, the goal is to educate and celebrate. “We’re proud to shine a light on the Black origins of House Music, as well as the artists who created it and continue to innovate today,” Staley said. “This month is about more than music; it’s about honoring a movement that has influenced countless generations, genres, and continues to bring people together, no matter their background.”

The programming will include multiple events throughout February, each featuring a mix of established and emerging DJs. Notable performances include Guud Heavens! ‘An Afro House Service’ at 18th Street Lounge on February 8, a collaborative event called ‘Wine Widdit’ at Le Mont Royal on February 13, and a showcase on February 16 at Culture DC featuring Karizma and Baron Hawk Poitier. The month will close out with ‘A Jazz House Experience’ on February 23, blending jazz elements with House Music in a unique live performance setting.

The events are designed to serve as both entertainment and education, offering attendees an opportunity to connect with the history and evolution of House Music. While House Music has long been a staple of dance culture worldwide, organizers emphasize the importance of acknowledging its Black origins and the artists who have shaped its progression over the years.

Church On Sunday describes itself as a collective aiming to create immersive and community-driven experiences in the electronic dance music scene.
